How to have repeat clients

Running a small business can be a daunting task day after day. The best strategy is to have clients that come back and give you repeat business. That way, you are not always searching for new clients. I have steadily built up my photography business over the past 10 years. I create strong relationships with all of my clients and focus on a personal customer experience. I believe this is what helps me have so many repeat clients.

The first interaction with a lead is probably the most important. A lot of my leads come from referrals. These are people I know through networking or even past clients I have worked with. I always try to either do a phone call or video call with the person to get to know them a little and hear all about their photography needs. This initial interaction feels more personal and shows the person that I am willing to give them my undivided attention before even working with them.

Whenever the lead becomes a client, I then deepen our personal connection. We have a few other meetings about the photography project and I always have open communication. I can be a creative collaborator in the project, or I can also work from a shot list that is provided.

The magic really happens on the photo shoot when we work together in person. I always try and be professional, laid back and friendly. I also am not just there to photograph, but really learn more about the brand or organization. I become part of the team and delve into the mission. This helps me create authentic photos with a lot of energy and story behind them.

After the photo shoot, I always deliver the photos in a timely manner. I explain the download process and leave the door to communication and questions open. Overall, I try and make the whole customer experience from start to finish seamless and stress free. This is how I have so many repeat clients. It is an easy decision for them to work with me again and again.

Creating a process for strong referrals is also key to having repeat clients. If you have a strong referral from someone, and they become a client, then it is a given they will come back and work with you. I do a lot of networking, send out email newsletters and post on social media. I do one-on-one coffee meetings and really deepen the relationships with my referral partners. All of this is so important to having repeat business.
